Room to Belong
For most people, a trip to a concert, a conference or a gala dinner never involves a second thought about the bathroom. But for thousands of Australians living with profound or complex disability, that simple certainty has never existed. While standard accessible toilets are an important inclusion, they do not meet everyone’s needs. As a result, some people are faced with an unfair choice: leave the event early or forgo attending altogether.
At the Cairns Convention Centre, we believe every guest should be able to participate fully and comfortably. Located on the Mezzanine Level adjacent to the Plenary, our Changing Places facility provides the specialist equipment and space needed to support people with high support needs. More than just a room, it offers something many of us take for granted: dignity, independence and the freedom to stay and enjoy the experience.
More than an Accessible Toilet
It’s a common misunderstanding that a Changing Places facility is simply a larger version of the accessible toilets found throughout the Centre. It isn’t. The two are built for very different needs.
Standard accessible toilets are designed for people who can transfer independently or with light assistance. They rarely have room for a carer, and they offer no way to safely change an adult who cannot stand. For an estimated 1.4 million Australians with a profound or severe disability, that gap has meant real exclusion — from sport, from culture, from the everyday civic life the rest of us move through without noticing.
A Changing Places facility closes that gap. To carry the accreditation, a room must meet a national standard that goes well beyond the building code minimum, and the Centre’s facility has been formally accredited by Changing Places Australia. That means it includes:
- A height-adjustable, adult-sized changing bench, so a person can be changed safely and comfortably rather than on the floor
- A constant-charging ceiling hoist that provides full coverage of the room, allowing carers to transfer someone without lifting
- A centrally placed peninsula toilet with drop-down grabrails and a backrest, giving carers space to assist from either side
- A retractable privacy screen that protects the user’s dignity while they’re being helped
- A wide automatic door and generous circulation space — enough room for a wheelchair user and up to two carers to move freely
Each feature serves a clear purpose, and together they make a day out feel possible. With the right facilities available on site, guests can stay and enjoy the full experience without the constant worry of time limits or unsuitable amenities. Carers have the equipment they need to provide support safely, and the person using the space is afforded the comfort, dignity and respect they deserve.

Part of a Broader Commitment
Our Changing Places room doesn’t stand alone. It’s one piece of a broader commitment the Cairns Convention Centre has made to be a genuinely welcoming place for everyone who visits.
That commitment can be seen throughout the Centre. It’s reflected in accessible parking bays located beside the car park lifts, complimentary wheelchairs available for guests to borrow, hearing loops in every meeting room, and Braille on door signage and lift buttons. It’s also present in family-friendly spaces such as the Ground Level parenting room, the Multi-Faith Prayer Room for quiet reflection, and the Centre’s support for the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, which helps guests with non-visible conditions discreetly signal that they may need extra care from trained staff.
Together, these features go beyond compliance. They reflect a simple belief: a world-class venue is only truly world-class when everyone can use it comfortably and confidently.
"True accessibility is about considering the full visitor experience. This facility is one practical way we can help ensure more guests, families and carers are able to attend events at the Centre with confidence.”
