It’s World Turtle Day, and here at Cairns Convention Centre, we’re taking a moment to salute one of the planet’s most charming, wise, and determined creatures: the sea turtle. And not just any sea turtle, mind you – today, we’re giving a very special shoutout to Sharon.
Sharon isn’t your average turtle. She’s a green sea turtle with a story of resilience. After suffering injuries from a boat strike, she was rescued and now calls the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at Fitzroy Island her temporary home. We’re proud to have sponsored Sharon’s recovery for 2 years now, helping to fund her treatment, care, and (fingers crossed) her eventual return to the big blue.
Now, if Sharon could talk, we bet she’d have some tales to tell. Estimated to be around 50-60 years old, she’s seen more of the Great Barrier Reef than most of us ever will – gliding past coral gardens and, perhaps, watching the Cairns Convention Centre grow and evolve over the years. We like to think she’s swum by and noticed our sustainability upgrades with an approving nod.
Jennie Gilbert, co-founder of the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, shares: “Every turtle we save is a step toward preserving the fragile balance of our marine ecosystems. Sharon’s journey reminds us of the impact we can all have when we work together to protect these incredible creatures.”
Here at the Centre, we’re constantly looking for ways to minimise our environmental footprint, supporting turtle rehab is just one part of our wider commitment to protecting the unique ecosystems that make Tropical North Queensland so special.
World Turtle Day is a great reminder that every small effort counts. Whether it’s picking up beach litter, supporting marine conservation, or just learning more about these ancient mariners, we all have a part to play in their survival.
So today, we celebrate Sharon. May her shell be ever shiny, her flippers strong, and her journey back to the sea smooth and safe.
