Cairns Convention Centre Delivers for Top Achievers

Cairns showed last December it can readily compete with more established locations like Hawaii and South East Asia resort destinations for the delivery of spectacular incentive conferences.

Over a 17-day period, nearly 4,000 top achievers and staff from a leading Korean multi-level marketing and distribution company had the time of their lives in Cairns in four back-to-back waves, which saw chartered Korean Air aircraft arriving and departing Cairns International Airport every four days.

Integral to the delivery of this top flight event was the Cairns Convention Centre, which was recently selected as 'One of World's Top 10 International Convention Centres' by Beyond Borders Survey, an authoritative annual listing voted by North American meeting planners.

“Cumulatively, this was the biggest event we have undertaken and meeting the group’s very exacting catering requirements presented extra challenges for the Centre” said Geoff Donaghy, Managing Director of the Cairns Convention Centre.

The Cairns Convention Centre kitchens provided all the Korean meal content (breakfast, lunch & dinners) to the four hotels where the delegates were housed. The Centre's Executive Chef, Perry Stevens and his team worked in close liaison with three Korean chefs who were flown in to supervise the preparation of over 50,000 meals, which were garnished with over 8 tonnes of Korean pickle especially imported for the event.

The highlight of the program was each Farewell Party at the Cairns Convention Centre, designed and produced by Cairns event company, Stageworks Australia.

An Australian bush band and animal handlers, complete with cockatoos, snakes and koalas entertained during cocktails before the delegates were led through to the non-stop carnival atmosphere of the dinner. A five course Western style gala banquet had singers descending from the ceiling, generating “Ricky Martin-style” energy that had the crowd on their feet every time.

Geoff Donaghy: “We now host a growing number of international conferences and this event has shown that the Cairns Convention Centre and the local tourism industry are also capable of providing a world class incentive experience for the largest of groups.”
